Veterinary Ultrasound for Complete Beginners: The basics

Let me guess… You know ultrasound could be a total game-changer in your practice, but every time you pick up the probe, you feel like you’re just guessing.

Maybe you avoid it altogether, passing the scan to a colleague who "knows what they're doing." Or you try, but you’re left second-guessing your findings. Sound familiar?

So many first-opinion vets tell me the same thing:

  • They want to use ultrasound confidently, but don’t know where to start.
  • They want a clear, structured approach instead of scanning aimlessly.
  • They want guidance that works on their own machine—not just fancy, high-end models.

If this sounds familiar, you’re exactly who I created this course for.
What you'll learn

Why Ultrasound Feels So Hard

The biggest struggles first-opinion vets face with ultrasound:
  • You hesitate to pick up the probe—worried you’ll get lost, so you pass scans to a colleague or take an x-ray instead.

  • Your scanning feels like guesswork—no repeatable method, just hoping you’re not missing something critical.

  • You’re unsure what’s normal—struggling to distinguish between normal variations and actual pathology.

  • Your images aren’t clear enough—and you’re not sure which settings on your machine to adjust to fix them.

  • You don’t get enough hands-on practise—and you worry you’ll forget what you’ve learned.

How We Fix It

By the end of this course you'll be able to:
  • Pick up the ultrasound probe with confidence—instead of hesitation.
  • Follow a systematic approach that ensures you don’t miss key structures.
  • Recognise when findings are normal and when they need further investigation.
  • Optimise your machine settings for clearer images every time.
  • Keep more cases in-house—instead of automatically referring them.
  • Maintain and build on your skills—with structured practice techniques.
  • Feel confident charging for your scans.

What Makes This Course Different?

Most ultrasound courses leave you overwhelmed with information but
no clear way to apply it in real practice.

This course is built for
first-opinion vets who want to use ultrasound confidently in everyday practice—without frustration or self-doubt.

  • Step-by-step scanning system—so you always know what to do next.

  • Learn on your own machine—so you can actually apply what you’re learning.

  • Clear guidance on what’s normal vs. abnormal—so you can stop second-guessing yourself.

  • Simple image optimisation techniques—so your scans are clearer and easier to interpret.

  • Ongoing support—so you can continue improving after finishing the course content.

By the time you finish, you’ll feel confident picking up the probe and using ultrasound as part of your clinical decision-making.

FREE BONUS: Confident Scan Reporting Starts Here!

No more vague scan memories or scribbled notes.

As part of this cohort, you’ll get early access to FOVU Report — our new guided ultrasound reporting tool, built to support you during the course.

It’s designed to help you spot what matters, describe your findings clearly, and record your scans with confidence — even in the busy pace of first opinion practice.

Instead of hesitating or second-guessing, you'll learn to report with clarity and structure — and back up what you saw with words that make sense to you, your team, and your clients.

You’ll be using FOVU Report throughout the course, and I’ll show you exactly how it fits into the way we scan, think, and communicate.

Access to the tool will close when the course ends, as it becomes part of the FOVU Club membership — but right now, this is your chance to try it first, shape how it develops, and let us know what works (and what doesn’t).

Camilla FOVU Ultrasound Course Instructor

Meet Your Instructor: Camilla Edwards

I graduated from KVL, Copenhagen in 2006 and spent much of my career in first opinion practice across East Anglia, with a strong focus on emergency and critical care. Like many vets, I knew ultrasound could be a game-changer — but I had to figure it out through trial and error.

Night shifts became my training ground, and my old Labrador Frida (R.I.P.) patiently helped me practise in those quiet moments.

In 2018, I earned my CertAVP from the RVC and trained with the ultrasound team at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. That same year, I launched my peripatetic ultrasound business — supporting first opinion vets with their scanning cases.

But again and again, I saw the same thing: vets wanted to scan confidently but lacked practical, structured training that fit real practice life.

That’s why I created FOVU — to make ultrasound approachable, affordable, and something any vet can use with confidence, every day.

"There is no other ultrasound resource for the general practitioner that is as unique and valuable to fill the need for veterinarians who are serious about becoming competent sonographers, in my opinion.
Camilla Edwards is an outstanding instructor who is passionate, knowledgeable, and just plain fun to work with to learn this skill that any dedicated professional can accomplish."
