Veterinary Ultrasound for Complete Beginners: The basics

"I just want to feel confident using ultrasound every day."

If you've ever thought those exact words, you're not alone.

Maybe you've been there: standing in front of the ultrasound machine, knowing it could give you answers, but feeling like you're just guessing. Or you find yourself saying "I'm not sure what I'm seeing here" more often than you'd like to admit.

So many first-opinion vets tell me the same thing:

  • "I'm not confident enough to charge for scans"
  • "There's never time to practise properly"
  • "I need a clear process to follow"
  • "I just don't want to miss something important"

If this sounds familiar, you're exactly who I created this course for.

What you'll learn

Why Ultrasound Feels So Scary

Here's what first-opinion vets really struggle with (in their own words):
  • "I'm not sure I'm doing it right"
You pick up the probe, but you're second-guessing every image. Is that normal? Abnormal? You're just not sure.

  • "There's never time to practise properly"
Between back-to-back consults and emergencies, when exactly are you supposed to become confident with scanning?

  • "Did I miss something important?"
That nagging worry you haven't been thorough enough, that you might have overlooked something significant.

  • "I don't want to charge clients when I'm not confident"
You know ultrasound adds value, but it doesn't feel right to charge when you're still learning.

  • "Other vets are better, so I just refer scans to them"
It's easier to pass the scan to a colleague, but deep down you wish you could handle it yourself.

But What If It Didn't Have To Feel This Hard?

Imagine walking into your next consultation and actually wanting to use ultrasound. Not because you have to, but because you know you can get clear answers quickly and confidently.

Picture this: You pick up the probe with a clear plan. You follow a systematic approach that ensures you don't miss key structures or pathology. You recognise when findings are normal and when they need investigation. You keep more cases in-house instead of automatically referring them.

Most importantly: You feel confident charging for your scans because you know you're providing real value.

This isn't a fantasy. It's exactly what happens when you have the right training approach.

Introducing: Veterinary Ultrasound The Basics

Structured veterinary ultrasound training for first-opinion vets who want to feel more confident and capable with small animal ultrasound.
I WANT TO SCAN WITH CONFIDENCE

What Makes This Different From Other Courses?

Most ultrasound courses leave you overwhelmed with information but
no clear way to apply it in real practice.

This course is built around what you actually told me you need:

How can I stop feeling like I've missed something important?"

→ You'll get a systematic scanning approach that ensures you're thorough and confident every time.

"I want to use my own machine, not some fancy one I'll never see"

→ We'll work with your specific machine. I'll help you find every button and optimize your settings.

"I need to know what's normal so I can spot what's not"

→ Clear guidance on normal vs. abnormal so you stop second-guessing yourself.

"I don't have time for complicated theory"

→ Bite-sized lessons designed for packed schedules. No fluff, just what you need to scan confidently.

"I want ongoing support, not just a course that ends"

→ Live Q&A sessions where you can ask about your actual cases and get real feedback.

By the time you finish, you'll feel confident picking up the probe and using ultrasound as part of your everyday clinical decision-making.

Camilla FOVU Ultrasound Course Instructor

Meet Your Instructor: Camilla Edwards

I graduated from KVL, Copenhagen in 2006 and spent most of my career in first-opinion practice, just like you.

And yes, I felt exactly the same way about ultrasound that you probably do now.

I remember standing there thinking "I have no idea what I'm looking at" and feeling frustrated that something so useful felt so impossible to learn. Night shifts became my training ground, and my old Labrador Frida (R.I.P.) patiently helped me practise in those quiet moments.

After earning my CertAVP and training with the ultrasound team at the Animal Health Trust, I launched my peripatetic ultrasound business. But again and again, I met vets who said the same thing: "I just want to feel confident using ultrasound every day."

That's why I created FOVU — to make ultrasound feel approachable and give you the systematic approach you've been asking for.

"There is no other ultrasound resource for the general practitioner that is as unique and valuable to fill the need for veterinarians who are serious about becoming competent sonographers, in my opinion.
Camilla Edwards is an outstanding instructor who is passionate, knowledgeable, and just plain fun to work with to learn this skill that any dedicated professional can accomplish."
- Eugene Rivers, DVM
