Hi, I’m Camilla, founder of First Opinion Veterinary Ultrasound (FOVU).
I’ve been a vet since 2006, working mainly in small animal general practice and emergency and critical care across East Anglia, UK.
I started FOVU in 2018 as a peripatetic ultrasound service. I would travel to practices and scan their patients on their own machines, providing the kind of ultrasonography that was useful and achievable in first-opinion practice.
As I spent more time working with practices, I kept hearing the same questions. Which ultrasound machine should we buy? How do I get more confident at ultrasound? How do I know if what I’m seeing is normal? How should I write up my findings?
Answering those questions gradually became a bigger part of what I did.
How FOVU evolved with me
I began reviewing ultrasound machines and teaching alongside my clinical work. In 2020, I started developing my own online training, alongside teaching vets in practice on the machines they actually use.
That last bit matters to me.
Ultrasound is operator dependent. When you’re holding the probe, you have to make decisions about what you’re seeing there and then. I know how easy it is for that to knock your confidence, particularly when you're learning.
My approach is to make things structured and repeatable. Rather than going into an abdominal scan wondering what pathology you might find, I encourage vets to start with specific questions, build up their skills and get used to recognising normal.
I developed the FOVU abdominal scanning framework to give vets a routine they can follow each time they scan. SPEEDS™ provides a structure for assessing and describing individual organs, so you can slow down your thinking and work through what you're actually seeing before trying to reach a conclusion.
Since starting FOVU, I've taught hundreds of vets around the world through online courses and in-practice training. What matters to me is what happens when the teaching finishes and you're back in practice with your own machine and your own patients.
I want you to have something you can go back to, practise and repeat. Small amounts of regular scanning add up. Making mistakes, reflecting on them and working out what you'll do differently next time is part of learning too.
FOVU has grown from those early days of me driving between practices into courses, ongoing training and software to help first-opinion vets with ultrasound reporting. But the reason behind it is much the same as it was at the beginning: I listen to the problems vets are having with ultrasound and try to find practical ways to help.
A little bit about me outside FOVU...
My interest in veterinary medicine started rather unusually. I grew up on an ostrich farm in Essex and, as a teenager, helped care for one of our ostriches when she needed a lot of veterinary treatment.
These days I'm based in Cambridge with my husband, who's a human GP, our three girls, Casper the cat and Pippi the dog. If you've watched much of my training, there's a good chance you've already met Pippi.
When I'm not working or ferrying children around, I love open-water swimming and race when I get the chance. I'm also a Lily Allen and Self Esteem fan and will happily sing along in the car. My children have made it quite clear that singing in public should probably remain off the agenda.

Many of your know her as FOVU's most popular team member! Pippi is currently 7 years old (July 2026) and is a superstar at ultrasound. She has been travelling with me on my peripatetic ultrasound jobs since she was 10 weeks old and has attended teaching sessions where she has fortunately behaved impeccably (not always the case at home!).Â
