If you’ve ever walked away from a scan thinking, "Did I check everything properly?"—you’re not alone. That lingering uncertainty, especially when you’ve spotted something by chance, can be frustrating and unsettling. It’s not a reflection of your experience. In fact, it’s a sign that structure might be missing from your scanning routine.

In this blog post, I want to show you how structured scanning can transform the way you use ultrasound—making your scans faster, your notes clearer, and your confidence stronger.

Why Structure Matters More Than You Think

Let’s start with a common trap: chasing images around the abdomen without a clear sequence. It has happened to all of us—especially when under pressure. But when your scanning lacks structure, it’s not just inefficient. It can lead to missed findings, second-guessing, and unnecessary repeat scans.

By contrast, a structured approach gives you four powerful advantages:

1. Consistency

  • You follow the same steps each time—no guesswork, no zigzagging.

  • You build a mental checklist, making each scan calmer and more predictable.

  • Learning builds naturally, as each scan reinforces the same sequence.

2. Confidence

  • You know you’ve checked each organ, instead of hoping you did.

  • That confidence spills over into your reporting and conversations with colleagues.

  • A structured report builds trust with your team—and with yourself.

3. Clarity

  • Seeing normal anatomy repeatedly helps you understand what’s truly typical.

  • Over time, subtle changes—like a slightly coarse liver or mild adrenal asymmetry—stand out more clearly.

  • You sharpen your pattern recognition and develop stronger diagnostic instincts.

4. Efficiency

  • Structured scanning saves time in the long run.

  • Once it becomes second nature, you move through the scan smoothly without backtracking.

  • It lightens your mental load, giving you more energy for clinical decisions.

Common Myths About Structured Scanning

Let’s clear up a few misconceptions I often hear:

"Structure will slow me down."
In reality, it’s the opposite. Once you’ve practised a solid scanning sequence, you stop hesitating and scanning becomes more efficient. It’s like using a sat nav—you might take a moment to set the route, but you’ll get there quicker and with less stress.

"Structure is only for beginners."
Actually, the most experienced ultrasonographers I know still use structure. They’ve just made it feel fluid and intuitive. Like a concert pianist, they’re still following a framework—it just looks effortless because of all the practise.

"I only need to scan the system related to the clinical signs."
We’re trained to be problem-focused, but in ultrasound, that can lead to missed diagnoses. A vomiting dog might have GI disease—or might be in early renal failure. A structured scan protects you from tunnel vision and ensures you don’t overlook something serious.

Real Case Example: When Structure Changes Everything

A dog came in for vomiting—with an occasional cough noted in the history. A focused scan of the GI tract might have missed the real issue. But because I followed a full structured abdominal scan the FOVU Abdominal Scanning Framework (including scanning through the liver into the thoracic cavity), I spotted nodules throughout the peripheral lungs.

It was likely infiltrative disease—something that completely changed the course of treatment. That’s the power of structure: it keeps you open to the unexpected.

Quick Tip to Try This Week

Next time you scan, mentally map out a simple step-by-step sequence—then stick to it. Even if you only scan one patient this way, notice how much calmer and clearer it feels.

How to Build Real Confidence with Veterinary Ultrasound This Year

If you're still hesitating to pick up the probe—worried you’ll miss something, or not sure if your image is “good enough”—you're not alone. So many of us learned in pressured environments, with no time to practise, no one to ask, and the quiet feeling that everyone else was better at it.

That’s exactly why the FOVU Club exists.

Inside, you’ll find bite-sized scan-along videos, a growing archive of case-based learning, and friendly monthly topics that give your scanning a sense of focus and flow. You’ll get practical tips on how to make images clearer (even on older machines), and real guidance on whether what you're seeing is normal—or not.

It’s not just about getting better at ultrasound—it’s about feeling:

  • More confident to scan your own cases instead of handing them over.

  • More accurate in your decisions—without second-guessing.

  • More valued in your team, because people start asking you to do the scans.

And best of all? You can go at your own pace, fit it around your schedule, and get support whenever you need it.
